Art From the Heart – Janet Secord

Now being involved with the Gallery – I am in awe of the talent of all the artists and craftsmen – noting that we are all varied in talents. There is something there for everyone.

For me, my motivation and inspiration for painting came out of desperation and the need to feel productive and challenged.

Creativity sometimes lies dormant for a long while – it is only now that I am older(and hopefully wiser) that I have taken the time to TRY and develop something that speaks to people and perhaps inspires.

janet-secordSo, a few years ago I got an old sheet, laid it across my lap, and with paint and canvas, and some gospel music in the background – proceeded to create- needless to say I went through a lot of canvases and paint before achieving what i thought was worthwhile. My mind had a vision but it took awhile for the brush to understand it.

Always intent on trying new mediums, varied subjects my paintings will all be ART FROM THE HEART.

Janet will be sitting in the gallery on June 21st if you would like to meet her and discuss art!

Year End Woodturning Competition – Fudgee

By Marys

If you have been following last year’s blog (April 4, 2012) my parting statement was about my completed work: “If my wife doesn’t abscond with it you will see it at one of my shows.” And that is how this story all began.

2013 Master's Award for Fruit

2013 Master’s Award for Fruit

Last fall I completed a two bowl set; 10” and 8”diameter dyed oak bowls. Barb promptly took the larger bowl, put it on the kitchen counter and declared that this was her new fruit bowl. Well I guess she does have spousal rights so my loss, her gain. The quest began looking for suitable replica fruit for the bowl with little success. Barb’s solution was for me to go down to the shop and make some fruit. I just happened to have a nice piece of spalted silver birch in my work shop…….. Who am I kidding……..? I have lots of weird pieces of wood in my shop, so I did manage to turn two apples and a pear. I was taken back on how elegant they looked and turned grapes, cherries and a variety of plums. Most of the wood is local but a few are exotic wood and nuts. Barb was quite pleased and we now have a bowl full of wooden fruit sitting in our kitchen which has become a conversational piece of artwork.

If you have read my bio you will note that I am an active member of the Kawartha Woodturning Guild. Each year I challenge myself to turn a piece of work for the Year End Woodturning Competition. As a Master Turner I am restricted to having only one submission and turning fruit would be considered spindle turning therefore putting them in a wooden bowl would not be allowed. I settled for a nicely sculpted glass shallow bowl. So I began selecting wood for my fruit bowl and as a result my submission consists of silver maple, spalted birch, hickory, butternut, hard maple, walnut, pine, padauk, purple heart and banksia nut. I used aniline pigment for one of the apples, cherries and red and green grapes. Tung oil was used on the remainder of the fruit to bring out the grain. On June 6th I was awarded first prize in the Master Turner’s submission. As for the fruit bowl, it can be viewed or purchased at My Favorite Things in Bobcaygeon.

So what can I say, Barb’s absconding with yet another one of my turned pieces stimulated my creative juices and challenged me (successfully) to try new things. Thanks Barb.

Morris will be sitting in the gallery next on July 4th.

Gail McFadden – Stone Fence

The Stone Fence

The Stone Fence

All of my paintings have stories to go with them. This painting is called “The Stone Fence”. My grandson and I were studying the stone fences on my ranch one day. We were doing lots of photos and suddenly he said to me, “Grandma, do you see what I see?” . Well, right then, I knew I had to paint the lady in the tree. This painting reminds me of a special day spent with a special grandson, and I am delighted to announce that proceeds from the sale of prints of this painting are going directly into his RESP to help him with career goals!

Betty Wilkinson

Betty Wilkinson, a founding member of the Fenelon Station Gallery died peacefully on December 25th, at Ross Memorial Hospital. Betty, a local resident of Rosedale and fiber artist enjoyed working with natural fibers to create classic household articles and apparel using heritage skills. As a spinner, weaver, knitter, rug hooker and instructor, she often used hand spun yarns to create her works of art. She enjoyed discussing the historical significance of these skills and demonstrating how spinning wheels and looms are operated.

Betty will be greatly missed by the Art Community and the numerous friends and associates she has made during her active life.

A Memorial Service will be held on January 5th, at Christ Church of Coboconk at 1 p.m.

Additional information can be obtained at www.jardinefuneralhomes.com.

Sandi Smith and Lililan Forester

Sandi Smith is drawing the ticket, as Lillian Forester, potter, holds the basket

On September 1st, we had this year’s draw.  Each year we ask visitors to fill out a ballot and near the end of the season, we draw a name to receive a prize of art in the gallery.

Sandi Smith of Stouffville, was a  visitor on the day and she pulled the winning ticket from this year’s draw.

Carole Wetheral

Carole Wetherall is standing with her husband Bill with the pieces of art that she chose with her prize.

Congratulations to the winner of the Station’s $100 Gift Certificate…Carole Wetheral of Cannington.

Carole came with her husband Bill and chose a few pieces of art to take home.  She spent about an hour in the gallery, trying to narrow down the art she wanted to buy.  In the end, she chose two of Peter Martin’s sculptures and a necklace and earring set made by  Janet Tysiak.  She was very happy to have won the prize and we are very pleased for her as well.

Welcome to my World of Coloured Glass and Sparkly Jewellery – Janet Tysiak

By Marys
 on July 18, 2012
 with no comments

I was born and raised in Tillsonburg, Ontario. I lived on a dairy farm, but earned my university tuition picking tobacco. Art courses taken while attending the University of Guelph tweaked my drawing and design skills. After graduation, I enrolled in a stained glass course…eventually becoming the teacher! My skills improved while working part-time at a stained glass store in Pickering. From the windows of my studio, located just minutes from Fenelon Falls, I can watch wildlife and boats go by…it’s a good life.

With the following pictures, I would like to show you the basic steps in putting together a stained glass window:

  1. A full scale drawing of the pattern is made. This gives me and my client a chance to make any changes before assembly begins.
  2. Picking out the glass: The glass chosen is dictated by the pattern, the amount of light that will filter through it, whether privacy is an issue, and cost.
  3. Cutting the glass is not difficult, but the more exact/skilled you are at it, the faster you get through the next step.
  4. Grinding the edges of the glass takes off any sharp edges and allows you to fine tune its shape.
  5. Depending on the project, each piece of glass will be wrapped with copper foil or inserted into lead channels.
  6. All of the pieces are then soldered together on both sides.
  7. After thoroughly cleaning the window, I like to apply a black patina to the lead lines. This makes the pattern and glass colours pop. Like a car, I wax and buff the finished piece.
  8. It’s time to hold the panel towards the light, and admire it for a while!

jewellery supplies

Three years ago I started making jewellery. I crochet with a fine wire…adding gemstones, crystals, pearls and glass beads. Each piece is unique… I like to call it wearable art. I’m usually pleasantly surprised by the combinations that I choose…sometimes not! For some clients, I can make something new and stunning from their old, broken and sentimental pieces of jewellery. I also like to use beach glass and tumbled glass in my work.

I would like to thank my clients for giving me the opportunity to design and create some beautiful pieces…of glass and/or jewellery. I would really like to thank my family for putting up with all the “stuff” that is constantly covering all flat surfaces in our home!

Finished jewellery

Custom work is always welcome…whether it’s stained glass windows, doors, lamps or jewellery. My studio is open year round by appointment.

Visit my page under Artists,  for contact information and more images of my work.
