We are getting ready!

By Station Gallery

All of the artists in the gallery are getting ready to greet our visitors this coming weekend, May 19th.  We are excited to be opening for another season.  We have a few new faces this year with new artwork.  Here you can see the work that goes into setting up the gallery each year.  We come in and dust, sweep and clean windows and then the artwork arrives and a few of our members do all the work turning the empty space into a lovely gallery.

A New Idea – Sandi McNeil

By Station Gallery

peeling branchesIn the process of gathering cedar bark I cut down the entire tree. However I use different parts of the tree for different purposes, and nothing is wasted. After cutting down the cedar tree, I cut all the limbs off, leaving a short stub on the trunk so the bark will lift off more easily.  The peeled trunk is put aside and is used for landscaping, bridge building and kindling wood. The cedar bark that I peel off, is processed into weavers, and is one of my favourite materials to use for basket weaving.  Large branches and small diameter trunks form the legs for twig furniture.  Smaller branches are put to one side and are also used in twig furniture. This year however, I found a new use for the small cedar branches that I haven’t thought of before!  I  love it when I get a new idea that I am pretty certain will work out successfully.  I don’t know why I haven’t thought of this idea before!!

branchesIn the past, I have often peeled vines and used them for basket frames. I have peeled basswood branches for wall weavings. I almost always include peeled willow and peeled dogwood in my baskets, but I have never peeled cedar branches with the intent of making a basket frame.  Impulsively, I decided to peel a pair of small cedar branches, exposing the creamy coloured wood that I knew was underneath. Then I carefully bent and flexed the cedar branch over my knee so it would bend to form a fish basket shape without breaking.  This worked well because the branches were so fresh, so I made several fish basket shapes and wired each pair together.  I have set these frames aside in my studio to let them dry out.  If I keep them out of the weather they should slowly age to a yellowish patina.

I will use the peeled cedar frames in my basket courses this summer, and I look forward to using them myself to add to my basket repertoire.

I will be in the gallery next, on June 10th.  Perhaps I will see you there!

Looking forward to 2015

We just had our first meeting of 2015, and we are all looking forward to opening the Gallery in May. We will have some new members this year, and some new and different kinds of art.

There will be more on this at a later date. We have actually had a sign if spring this week, and some of the snow has started to melt. Everyone is thankful about that.

It has been a long and cold winter, (coldest since records have been kept) so spring is a very welcome arrival. Summer will be even better.

After sitting empty all winter, the doors opened for another season at the Station Gallery in Fenelon Falls. All participating artists pitched in to “spring clean” and hang/display the artwork. We really enjoy working in this historic building. The Station’s character makes our artwork shine.

Welcome to our Train Station. Browse through the photos to see a little of what you’ll find when you make your way to Fenelon Falls. Remember to check our hours of operation. The Station is fully accessible.

Model Railroader Magazine

We are mentioned this month in the July 2013 edition of Model railroader magazine.  A fellow called Lorne Munro visited Fenelon Falls and took a picture of our station/gallery, and has made up plans based on his images.

He says

This building stands on a now abandoned 55-mile-long rural branch line that once connected the town of Lindsay to Haliburton.

The track may be abandoned, but we don’t feel that way!  You can check out his drawings and the short mention of us at Model Railroader Magazine.  You may even find a copy of the magazine somewhere!

Sandi Smith and Lililan Forester

Sandi Smith is drawing the ticket, as Lillian Forester, potter, holds the basket

On September 1st, we had this year’s draw.  Each year we ask visitors to fill out a ballot and near the end of the season, we draw a name to receive a prize of art in the gallery.

Sandi Smith of Stouffville, was a  visitor on the day and she pulled the winning ticket from this year’s draw.

Carole Wetheral

Carole Wetherall is standing with her husband Bill with the pieces of art that she chose with her prize.

Congratulations to the winner of the Station’s $100 Gift Certificate…Carole Wetheral of Cannington.

Carole came with her husband Bill and chose a few pieces of art to take home.  She spent about an hour in the gallery, trying to narrow down the art she wanted to buy.  In the end, she chose two of Peter Martin’s sculptures and a necklace and earring set made by  Janet Tysiak.  She was very happy to have won the prize and we are very pleased for her as well.
