Peter Lauricella- Woodturner
Artist Statement
Peter is a polychromatic segmented woodturner. He use sophisticated segmentation techniques, where wood is cut to precise dimensions and at the exact angles necessary and then these pieces are carefully glued together to form the basic desired shape. After assembly, a powerful lathe is used to remove some of the wood and turn the piece to its finished size and shape before a food safe oil and wax finish is applied.
Inspiration flows to Peter from nature: choosing many woods with complimenting tones, hues, colors and textures. He contrast these features with embellishing components which enrich and enliven his work. Utilizing patterns he sees in designs in clothing, or in photographs or architecture, his artwork becomes more distinctive and unique, but always fully functional.
Peter’s experience as a professional woodworker for many years has allowed him to use many unusual techniques like double stack cutting, staining or ebonizing, using inlays and the thought provoking use of thin wood or veneers, both natural and dyed. Rarely using others’ plans, he prefers to develop his own designs, which contributes to his distinctive style, which brings him great joy and satisfaction.
